Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Visit Springfield’s Amy Beadle stopped by the WTAX Morning Newswatch to chat with Will Stevenson about upcoming local events.  A new memorial going up at Oak Ridge Cemetery is one of a number of events in the month of October Visit Springfield wants you to take part in.

The Springfield Illinois Gold Star Families Memorial Dedication is going to be happening at Oak Ridge cemetery in the war memorial area. Beadle says, “it’s an amazing memorial going up. They are going to be doing the official dedication October 18th at 10 a.m. I imagine it will be an extremely moving and a very heart felt event. So, we invite everyone to come to that”.

Also coming up is a day dedicated to Abraham Lincoln and his wedding to Mary Todd Lincoln. A series of events on November 1st will kick off at 10:30 a.m. with Graveside Reflections at Oak Ridge Cemetary, which will feature a wreath-laying ceremony at the Lincoln Tomb and a tour of gravesites of other notable figures who were in attendance of their wedding.

Then at 1:00 p.m. there will be a Mary Lincoln Portrayal. Performer Pam Brown will bring Mary Lincoln’s voice to life and speak about her courtship and marriage to Abraham Lincoln.

Finally, at 2:00 p.m. guests can watch the reenactment of the Lincolns’ wedding at St. Paul’s Cathedral located at 815 S. 2nd St. Beadle shares that the significance of the cathedral is Reverend Dresser who married the Lincolns, was reverend at that cathedral. They did not actually get married at that specific cathedral. The wedding reenactment will feature live music typical of a 19th century celebration and during the reception guests will get to eat cake made from an authentic 1840s recipe.
