UPDATE:  Two dead after accident on I-55 in Springfield

UPDATED: 11:15 A.M.

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Two people are dead Monday morning on Interstate 55 in Springfield.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened at 1:02 a.m. Monday on Interstate 55 southbound near the East Lake Shore Drive exit.  The crash involved two vehicles, one of which was going the wrong way.

The drivers of both vehicles — identified by Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon as a 42-year-old woman from Wentzville, MO, and a 51-year-old woman from Girard, IL — were pronounced dead at the scene.  A passenger of one of the vehicles was taken to the hospital with injuries.  Allmon says autopsies on the two fatal victims will be conducted later Monday. Names are not yet being released pending notification of next of kin. The condition of the injured passenger is not known.

The roadway reopened around 6:00 a.m. Monday, roughly five hours after the crash.  An investigation into the crash continues.
