Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Sangamon Towers has been in the news for the wrong reasons.

“I’ve been there for twelve years,” said Kayla Watson (pictured, left), a caseworker and member of SEIU, “so I’ve seen that place at its very best to at its absolute worst. Security issues violent issues, bedbug issues, elevator issues, outside lighting issues. The biggest one is security. There have been stabbings there, arsons there, and even a murder.”

Mold and human waste have also been problems.

Watson and U.S. Rep. Nikki Budzinski (pictured, right) (D-Springfield) were part of a meeting with management of the Section 8 property, which houses seniors and the disabled. After the meeting, Watson told reporters progress has already been made.

“One of the most important first steps is security,” Watson continued. “That is their home, and they should feel secured in that place. In the past it has not been that way, so with the commitment of Pacific Management stating that security is Number One, we do have 24-hour security in that building now, and you do need to show an ID upon entry of that building.”
