Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Citizens Club of Springfield held its monthly fourth Friday meeting at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, continuing its mission to foster open dialogue and civic engagement among residents.
Since its founding in 2005, the Citizens Club has provided a nonpartisan platform for Springfield residents to explore pressing community issues, connect with local leaders, and participate in meaningful conversations.
More than a year after a major fire, downtown Springfield continues to face adversity, including the Wyndam Hotel and several businesses announcing their closure.
The Panel Consisted of:
- Amy Rasing – Director of Planning and Economic Development for the City of Springfield
- Jay Shanle – Communication Director, Downtown Springfield Inc.
- Lakeisha Purchase-Ward 5 Alderwoman & Downtown Springfield Business Owner
- Michael Higgins-Owner & Chef Maldaner’s Restaurant and Catering
- Judy Tighe-Executive Director Jacksonville Main Street
Elizabeth Wake recently closed her downtown business the Wakery and stated “I haven’t seen an action plan from DSI or from the city. A lot of times we hear a very flowery presentation but we as owners want to know what the next steps are going to be.” Wake went on to say, “parking is not an issue downtown, but the signage, the awareness of where to park, when to park and how long you can park is.”
Ward 5 Alderwoman and downtown business owner Lakeisha Purchase discussed the new signage that will be going up, explaining after hour parking and the benefits it will provide for residents to continue to explore downtown.
The Citizens Club meets every fourth Friday of each month at the Hoogland Center for the Arts.
