Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – While there have been opportunities to early-vote or vote by mail, Tuesday is it. The primary election day.

Sangamon County Sheriff Paula Crouch, appointed after Jack Campbell retired more than a year ago, faces retired deputy David Timm in the Republican primary.

If Crouch wins a full four-year term. “We are going to continue to improve our in-person training,” she said. “You can never train too much, as our laws chance, tactics change, there’s more research that comes out on better practices, more study-focused training. We have to increase our staffing numbers as far as getting quality applicants to hire.”

Timm has the department could hardly offer less training. “I think that is a huge part of the problem,” he said. “We can’t just check boxes and just do what is required by the state. We have to go above and beyond. Before I retired, which was just over a year ago. The last de-escalation training I had before I retired was about three minutes long and about five slides on a slide show. That’s not acceptable in this day and age of law enforcement.”

While Crouch boasts all of the high-profile endorsements, Timm hopes the support of rank-and-file cops carries him.

Crouch and Timm made their remarks on the WTAX Morning Newswatch.
