Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell asking for patience with investigation of Massey shooting

Springfield, ILĀ  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell is responding to requests for more information regarding the early Saturday morning deputy-involved shooting that left 36-year-old Sonya Massey dead. Campbell posted on social media Wednesday asking the public and media to be patient as the Illinois State Police conduct their investigation.

 

 

Autopsy Results

On Monday, Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon released preliminary autopsy reports indicating Massey died from a gunshot wound. Allmon confirmed Massey was transported from her residence in the 2800 block of Hoover Avenue by EMS to HSHS St. John’s Hospital and was confirmed dead at 1:47 a.m.

Saturday at 9:20 am, Sangamon County Communications Director Jeff Wilhite released the following statement:

Sangamon County shooting release

Tiara Standage, who lives near Massey’s residence, told our news partners at WAND TV that law enforcement needs to be transparent about everything that led to the shooting, including the release of body cam video.

Standage is planning a protest at the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office in front of the County Building on 9th Street at 9am on Friday.
