Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The biggest owner of automobile dealerships in Springfield could soon itself have at least one new owner.

The Springfield Business Journal reports the Green Family dealerships are in the midst of being sold, but nothing is final yet.

Executive Editor Michelle Ownbey, on the WTAX Morning Newswatch, said at least one of the buyers is Kunes Country, which has multiple dealerships in other parts of the state.

“I understand the folks from Kunes were in town earlier this week, introducing themselves to some of the staff,” said Ownbey.  “Kunes is also a big operator. They’ve got about 40 auto and RV dealerships in Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.  The closest ones to here would be in Macomb and Quincy.”

There are a dozen Green dealerships in Springfield.

“We were told by a spokesperson they anticipate releasing more details around the first part of October, so I presume that is when the sale is actually set to close,” said Ownbey.  “She did say that it will pretty well be business as usual, that the new owners have a policy of retaining all employees and managers.  So, I don’t think you’ll see any drastic difference as far as that goes. You’ll probably be dealing with the same people you have all along.”

Ownbey appears weekly on the WTAX Morning Newswatch.
