Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Scheels Sports Park is ready for its close-up.

Capitol City Now has obtained a memo from the park’s public relations firm that a soft opening is set for Friday night, and, appropriate to a soft opening, it’s a softball tournament. Play Time Sports is putting on Fallout Fastball, a weekend event featuring players 10-U through high school in the Springfield Clinic Dome along South MacArthur Boulevard.

The memo from Kind Consulting‘s Sara Wojcicki Jimenez says, “While construction continues on the outdoor fields and park amenities, this tournament marks the start of our soft-opening phase — giving us a chance to test operations and celebrate progress together. We’ll be hosting more small-scale events like this throughout the fall and winter as we put the finishing touches on the rest of the park.”

The complex’s first non-sports event is a Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce gathering, Chamber on Tap, set for Thursday, Nov. 13.

The sports park’s web site says the park’s grand opening is scheduled for May 2026.
