Massey Commission prepares to sunset

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Members of the Massey Commission were together again Wednesday for the third of three listening sessions to hone recommendations to the full commission for its final meeting Monday, Oct. 27.

“What I heard in the room was: we need more,” commission managing director Kelly Hurst (pictured) said after the meeting. “This isn’t enough, and this room tonight could not even contain all of the things that we needed to talk about. So we also heard from some folks in the room that had never been engaged before and people who have been here from the very beginning.

“So we have all levels.”

While two aldermen attended the meeting, more than one person noted District 186 was not represented.

“What we learned is there are some people from District 186 here in the room,” said Hurst. “And what there isn’t is someone who has the power to change a policy or to enact something and so it came back to: how are we going to organize around that? What does that look like? (Superintendent) Jennifer Gill does not have to show up everywhere, but there are other people, right? It’s never going to be incumbent on just one person.

“Leaders do not always have a title.”

That final meeting is Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. at Memorial Learning Center.
