Springfield, IL (WAND) – Family Day at the Illinois State Fair is not just about food and rides. For many, it’s about taking a pause from their day-to-day lives and creating lasting memories.

“I think it’s great to spend time with family and give our kids those memories,” parent Paige Hinthorn said.

While funnel cakes are a priority at the fair, Ryan Swaar said family time is much more important.

“I’m still going to spend $500 on funnel cakes for sure, but I have to pay so much to get in, so that helps,” Swaar said.

The theme on Sunday was Family Day, offering cheaper ticket rates for larger families to get in on the fun.

Swaar’s daughter, Lyvia, hopes to make a tradition out of the fair.

“This is my first year that I can actually remember. I was here when I was little, but I don’t remember it, so I’m trying to make a new memory,” Lyvia said.

Whether it was the prizes, concerts or food that brought families out to the fair, many said they are taking home unforgettable memories.

“It’s a good time to spend with your family, and spending time with your family is one of the biggest joys you’ll ever get,” Lyvia said.

For many families, this is an annual tradition and many people said they are already looking forward to next year.
