Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – When Lanphier High School plays its first football game of the season on Aug. 30, there will be a new coach on the sidelines. Ademola Adeniji, after taking over as head coach in February, resigned earlier this week after what he called a “spirited discussion” with the athletic director.

The dispute was over his players volunteering at the Illinois State Fair to raise money for the program and the need for additional practices before the start of the season, as required by IHSA.

Adeniji said his plan was for the players to have all of the required practices completed as required, but money was needed for items not covered by the district. The funds raised were earmarked for items including game equipment, gear and food.

“My players come from low-income backgrounds. Some are hungry and need food to have energy to practice.” Adeniji said the money was also to be used to help players, some who wear the same clothes every day, with apparel and laundry.

“I was told I was insubordinate.” Adeniji said he received a call after the meeting and was told the district decided to place him on administrative leave.

Without Adeniji leading the program, the season will go on, and he said, “I have instilled in the players that they need to be confident, consistent, accountable and work hard.  No excuses.” Adeniji said he had been working to create a positive culture and preparing them for life.

Adeniji is a paraprofessional at Jefferson Middle School and is in the process of getting his physical education certification.

District 186 confirmed Brandon Miller, a physical education teacher at Lanphier and an assistant football coach, will step up and take over as interim coach for the season.

The Lions will face Lincoln on the road on Aug. 30.

Capitol City Now reached out to Lanphier Athletic Director Chris Hampsey, but the call has not yet been returned.
