MATTOON, Ill. (CAPITOL CITY NOW)– Lake Mattoon is closed due to the presence of a harmful algal bloom that can release neurological toxins.
According to our news partners at WAND TV, the closure was issued “out of an abundance of caution,” the City of Mattoon said. The beach will be closed until further notice, pending more test results from sampling taken Friday.
People are being told to avoid the water.
This comes after the entire city of Mattoon was put under a “Do Not Drink” order due to toxins in the drinking water.
Mattoon City Council approved several plans Tuesday night to help improve water access and quality in the community.
