Springfield, IL (CHAMBANA TODAY) – Illinois has been named a “high-performance” state for emergency preparedness, the highest ranking available, in a newly released report by Trust for America’s Health.
The state jumped from the middle performance tier in 2025 to the top tier in 2026, one of only eight states to move up a tier this year. Twenty states total earned high-performance designations. Illinois previously held top-tier rankings in 2020 and 2022.
The annual report evaluates states across ten indicators including incident management, patient safety, and health security surveillance.
Illinois’ rise in the rankings reflects several years of investment in public health infrastructure, including a $1.5 million upgrade to two state hospitals to serve as Elite Special Pathogen Treatment Centers, a $45 million modernization of public health data systems, and the development of a Public Health Emergency Preparedness Response Playbook following COVID-19. The state also joined the World Health Organization’s Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network after the federal government withdrew from WHO, and has taken steps to expand vaccine access through mobile clinics, pharmacy immunizations, and state-regulated insurance requirements.
“Despite the Trump administration gutting vital resources for states, Illinois continues to strengthen its public health partnerships and preventative measures while leading with science,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “While we are proud to be recognized as one of the most prepared states, we remain gravely concerned about the lack of cooperation, resources, and commitment to science on the federal level should there be another public health catastrophe.”
IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra called the ranking a reflection of sustained investment in readiness.
“Under the leadership of Governor Pritzker and the General Assembly, IDPH has invested in stronger systems, better training, and global partnerships that enhance our ability to protect our communities during times of crisis,” Vohra said.
