Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinois Democrats found some things to laugh about – and even sing about – during the Governor’s Day brunch Wednesday.
Attorney General Kwame Raoul sang a few measures of “The Room Where It Happens” from Hamilton before explaining that you have to be in the room – the courtroom – to help preserve the rule of law “and get consequential relief.”
The morning was a giant lovefest for U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), who is not seeking another term. He said, “Politics is in my bloodstream, and, as Morris Udall once said, if you have politics in your bloodstream, only embalming fluid will replace it.”
The state’s Democrats not only hold supermajorities in the state House and Senate, and they hold both U.S. Senate seats and all other statewide offices. Still, Gov. JB Pritzker (pictured, left) would neither declare Democratic domination nor spell out any positives of a system with two healthy political parties. “We’re fighting it out in every district, so it’s not a one-party state,” Pritzker told reporters after Wednesday afternoon’s rally on the Director’s Lawn at the fair. “I’m very proud of the fact that Democrats actually represent the working people of this state and are standing up for their rights and making sure we’re putting money in their pockets and lowering costs for them.”
A frequent attack dog against President Donald Trump, U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) told the brunch crowd, “I can’t wait to get back into the majority, because I am f—in’ tired of fixing things that Republicans break.”
Much more of that, and Duckworth might be ready to join Matchbox Twenty.
