IL House GOP: Dems should forget about Trump and focus on affordability

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A trio of Illinois House Republicans says supermajority Democrats would rather complain about President Trump than helping relieve Illinoisans of the rising cost of living.

“They talk about affordability and do nothing,” said State Rep. Bill Hauter (pictured, center) (R-Springfield), who is proposing elimination of the taxes on tips and overtime.

State Rep. Brad Fritts (pictured, left) (R-Dixon) wants to suspend the sales tax on gasoline. “It’s a tax on a tax,” said Fritts, “and the state of Illinois gets a windfall when you continue to see gas prices rise in this way. It’s five percent on the entire purchase, which is a really, really big deal.”

The sales tax on gas is not to be confused with the Motor Fuel Tax, which is now indexed to inflation.

When Bruce Rauner was governor, the state had a scholarship program called Invest in Kida. It incentivized donors to give money for private school scholarships. Lawmakers allowed the program to expire. “Now we have the Educational Choice for Children’s Act,” said State Rep. Mike Coffey (pictured, right) (R-Springfield), “a federal initiative that aims to provide tax credits for donations to scholarship-granting organizations. This federal initiative does not cost taxpayers a dime. Donors can give up to $1,700 and receive a tax credit of 100 percent for that expenditure.”

Lawmakers plan to adjourn May 31. The new fiscal year begins July 1.
