Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A Texas man is accused of having 300 pounds of an illegal drug in his possession when Illinois State Police pulled him over recently.

The indictment is sealed, according to online federal court records; but according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Springfield, William Mayes, Jr., 35, was charged Wednesday with possessing a substance containing methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

According to the news release, Mayes was stopped by an Illinois State Trooper, and a search of his vehicle resulted in the meth being found.  However, it’s not clear where or when the discovery was made.

On Thursday, according to court records, a judge ordered Mayes to remain held in custody of U.S. Marshals.  It is not known when his next court hearing will be.

Federal Public Defender Robert Scherschligt has been appointed to represent Mayes, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Weir will be prosecutor.

According to the news release, Mayes could face anywhere from ten years to life in prison if convicted.
