Ex-SPD sergeant charged with DUI in court

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A Nov. 14 court date has been set for a former Springfield police sergeant who, on his last day on the job, was allegedly drunk when he turned left in front of a motorcycle a little more than a year ago.

It would be a date to schedule a trial or a guilty plea for Michael Egan (pictured).

The case comes amid tensions between police and the community. Fueling the distrust is the assertion that other officers helped Egan by giving him gum and water and delaying a blood alcohol test. Four officers were punished for how they handled the investigation.

The collision badly injured Chelsey Farley and her then-boyfriend, Trevor Hopkins. A couple of dozen members of the motorcycle safety group ABATE sat in the gallery to support the victims. Afterward. ABATE Illinois lobbyist Josh Witkowski said Egan has shown no remorse.

“You would hope that somebody would realize how badly their irresponsible actions have impacted individuals,” said Witkowski. “You would hope that there would be remorse, but, sometimes, there is just no hope for that.”
