Decatur, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Environmental Protection Agency says Decatur-based Archer Daniels Midland is already taking steps to comply with an order after carbon dioxide and a liquid leaked into the ground in violation of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act.
The leak during a carbon sequestration process happened in July, 2024, and the agency says there was no immediate threat to public of livestock health.
ADM, which had temporarily stopped injections, now must ensure that future injections are safe.
The area water supply wasn’t impacted, because officials say most of that comes from Lake Decatur.
“EPA is committed to safeguarding our nation’s drinking water sources while supporting economic development and unleashing American energy. EPA’s Underground Injection Control (UIC) Class VI program plays a key role in our nation’s energy future by protecting underground water supplies and ensuring that underground carbon storage captured from industrial, and energy related sources is safe,” said an EPA news release.
