Doctor’s orders: Cover preventive heart scans

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Many health care professionals, if not all, would tell you preventive care and early detection are life savers.

Doctors with State Rep. Yolonda Morris (pictured, left) (D-Chicago) Wednesday said a heart scan to detect plaque buildup should be covered by insurance.

“This is the kind of situation that I see every single day,” said Dr. Ben Freed (pictured, right) “It’s also very much in line with what’s happening currently in the guidelines, which just were updated – after about seven or eight years – last week. And the coronary calcium score is now an integral part of the algorithm of taking care of patients for primary prevention and screening.”

Morris, who said she has a family history of heart disease and that her aunt did not even make it to fifty, said her bill “requires insurance coverage for heart scans. Health plans would cover a medically necessary heart scan for adults forty and older, when recommended by a licensed health care provider.”

The bill is in committee.
