Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Crews are working on cleaning up what could be described a bit of a mess in downtown Springfield, after a water main broke Thursday evening.

City Water, Light, and Power says their crews discovered what turned out to be a 12-foot break in a water main near 5th and Monroe. That left Monroe between 4th and 5th looking like a swimming pool for a time, as crews worked to get the line shut off.  That also left more than 250 electric customers in the dark for a time, officials say, at the request of the Springfield Fire Department.

Crews are now working to replace 20 feet worth of water main in the area. No word on when that will be solved, but the utility calls it significant work.

Most of the power has been restored, with building and electrical inspectors working in the area as well.
