Springfield, IL (WAND) – On Feb. 20, Curve Inn caught fire. The beer garden was a complete loss and the inside of the building was damaged as well.

Now, owners Ray and Ami Merchant are trying to figure out their next steps.

“The insurance company fire investigators still have that area [beer garden] roped off, no one’s allowed to be in that area,” Ami Merchant said. “So I think they’re just trying to determine what caused the fire, and once that gets done, we will move forward on that area as well.”

Their task for the last few days has been to clear large equipment and trash out of the building. But, they haven’t been alone. On Thursday, they had about 50 volunteers come and help carry out large equipment and start cleaning.

One of those volunteers was Brent Sutton, a regular at Curve Inn. He said the Merchants are quick to help charity events and benefits, including some he’s organized himself.

“They bend over backwards for every organization that’s coming through, every charity,” Sutton said. “They are just the first ones to step up and support people in their time of need. So now the best way we can help them is support in their time of need.”

Merchant said she’s been blown away by all of the love and support they’ve received since the fire. From tip jars at businesses across the area to a GoFundMe, the community has shown up for the Merchants and their employees.

“Thank you for everything, your support, and everything,” Merchant said. “The tip jars and the bank fund and people being here to help and sharing your love. We appreciate it and are so grateful.”

Merchant said they aren’t sure what will come next for Curve Inn. They need to get through the clean-up and insurance claims before they can make decisions about the future.
