Atlanta, GA (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A chain store specializing in clothing for children and babies, with 25 Illinois locations including one in Springfield, is planning on closing more than 100 locations over the next several years.

According to a news release and an earnings and financial report, Carter’s says 150 stores will close over the next three years, “at lease expiration.”  A list of stores closing is not yet known, but Carter’s has a location on Veteran’s Drive, in the same shopping center as Harvest Market.

The move is part of what it calls “ongoing transformation efforts” that are designed to “right size its cost structure and improve productivity.”

In addition to its own store brand, Carter’s also controls the long-known “Osh Kosh” and “Osh Kosh B’Gosh.”

According to a news release, sales in its Third Quarter of 2025 decreased 0.1% to $757.8 million, compared to the same period a year earlier.  Operating income, though, decreased 62.2% to $29.1 million.  The release, however, also touted paying cash dividends to shareholders totaling $47.2 million in the first three quarters of the fiscal year

“Our third quarter performance reflected continued improvement in U.S. Retail business demand as we achieved positive comparable sales and improved pricing for the second consecutive quarter,” said Douglas C. Palladini, Chief Executive Officer & President, in a news release. “However, elevated product costs, in part due to the impact of higher tariffs, as well as additional investment, weighed meaningfully on our profitability.”

In addition to Springfield, the closest Carter’s would be in Bloomington and East Peoria. The company is based in Atlanta, GA.
