Bid to control volume on streaming commercials

Bid to control volume on streaming commercials

Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Hey, turn that down, will ya?

“The FCC currently pre-empts most state or local regulation of cable or broadcast television,” said State Sen. Doris Turner (D-Springfield), “but streaming services operate over the Internet and fall outside that scope.

“We all know the feeling when our tee vee show or movie cuts to a commercial, and the volume gets louder, forcing us to constantly adjust the volume on our tee vee,” said Turner. “We’re working to prohibit the commercials being played louder than the programming on video streaming services, directly improving viewership experiences.”

Turner and State Sen. Mike Halpin (D-Rock Island) announced their bill Thursday at a Capitol news conference.

This may sound like a good idea, but why does it have to be a law?

“It really does affect people’s quality of life,” said Turner, “and I think that we have a responsibility to look at these things and do what we can.”
